JCRC fortifies community outreach, legislative branch

JOSHUA SCHUSTER
Bulletin Staff

By expanding its staff, the San Francisco Jewish Community Relations Council has new resources ready to handle tricky legislative issues and rev up contacts with non-Jews.

Gia Daniller, a veteran worker in the political world, began work last month as JCRC's first full-time director of legislative affairs.

Ellen Rosen, a longtime worker and volunteer in local Jewish agencies, took late last year as director of intergroup relations.

Previously, one person handled both jobs -- JCRC associate director Felice Joffe, who took maternity leave and decided not to return. Rabbi Doug Kahn, JCRC's executive director, said the agency split the associate director's tasks into two jobs to better divide the workload.

In her new position, Daniller will track local and state legislation and build on the Jewish community's relations with public officials.

Daniller has spent the past three years working as Northern California field representative at the office of Sen. Barbara Boxer (D -- Greenbrae). Previously she worked as a political liaison for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Washington, D.C. She is a graduate from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

"It's an exciting challenge to expand JCRC sophistication in government relations," said Daniller, a San Francisco resident.

Kahn said Daniller "brings a great array of experience and a wonderful network of contacts. She has a deep commitment to the Jewish community and will add a whole new dimension to our staff."

Rosen is returning to the JCRC staff after working as assistant director of the agency from 1981 to 1987. In her new role, she'll be reaching out to the diverse ethnic and religious communities in the Bay Area .

"It's nice to be back in an agency I've always been very fond of," said Rosen, who's been involved with the JCRC as far back as 1975. "It still excites me. Something has been telling me I belong here."

Rosen, a Mill Valley resident, serves as a trustee for the Tamalpais Union High School District. She is also a former president of the board for the Jewish Bulletin.

"I've always had enormous respect for Ellen's skills and talent," said Kahn. "I also know she has a special passion in the area of intergroup relations."
