Switzerland to hold referendum on fund

BERN (JTA) -- Switzerland will hold a national referendum next year on whether to use part of its gold reserves to create a foundation to help victims of disasters around the world.

In 1997, Swiss officials proposed the Foundation for the Future.

It is now unclear whether any of the foundation's money will be earmarked for Holocaust victims, as Swiss leaders originally vowed.

The referendum itself has been postponed several times.

Norway will create fund for Nazi victims

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Norwegian Jewish leaders are hailing a decision by the nation's parliament to create a $58 million Holocaust fund.

About $26 million of that total will be given to Jewish victims of the Nazis.

The remaining $32 million will be earmarked for various projects, including the creation of a Holocaust studies center in Norway.

Some 2,200 Jews were arrested in Norway during the Nazi occupation. Of the 767 who were deported to Nazi death camps, only 30 survived.
