NEW YORK (JTA) -- One of the former stars of "Seinfeld" is taking on the role of a spy for Israel.

Jason Alexander, who whined through life as George Costanza in the NBC hit, is slated to play Jonathan Pollard in an upcoming film on Showtime.

Pollard is currently serving a life sentence in the United States for spying for the Jewish state. Alexander has been active in the past on behalf of the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee.

Hundreds rap Heston at Brandeis University

BOSTON (JTA) -- Hundreds of demonstrators at Brandeis University protested an appearance there by National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston.

During the rally, which was sponsored by the American Jewish Congress, students chanted anti-gun slogans and some lay on the pavement, fake blood oozing from them.

During his speech, Heston told a Brandeis audience to "question authority" when it comes to gun control laws.

Supreme Court turns down refugees' case

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Jewish immigrants and refugees who entered the United States after 1996 and who have yet to become citizens will continue to be ineligible for welfare benefits.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear a challenge Monday to laws that limit such benefits to U.S. citizens. Jewish groups called the court's refusal a major disappointment.

Israelis, Palestinians take break in talks

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A weeklong round of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in Washington ended Tuesday without any breakthroughs.

The talks are set to resume Monday, according to the U.S. State Department, which described the talks as "serious and intensive" but added that there are "remaining gaps" on the issues facing the two sides.
