Szyk Society of Burlingame plans Washington party
The Arthur Szyk Society, based in Burlingame, will sponsor a reception Tuesday at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C., in Hadassah Lieberman, wife of Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), Dr. Charles Syers, Szyk Society board president, and Gayle Syers of
Szyk quickly rose to prominence as the leading political caricaturist in the United States during World War II. Adolf Hitler put a price tag on his head. The Times of London declared his artwork to be "among the most beautiful ever produced by the hand of man." An ardent defender of Zionism, Szyk was also lauded by Eleanor Roosevelt as a "one-man army against fascism." The Arthur Szyk Society, a national, nonprofit arts organization, presents the artist's prolific body of works and is dedicated to preserving Szyk's legacy as an artist and as a champion of democratic and Jewish values. In the fall, the society will collaborate with U.C. Berkeley and Lehrhaus Judaica in premiering "Justice Illuminated," a traveling exhibition for display at Bay Area campuses.
