East Bay Shorts College counselor will provide tips

College counselor Martin Nemko will speak on "How to Get an Ivy League Education at a State University" at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan.

Playwriting class curtain goes up

A five-week class in playwriting begins at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the Contra Costa Jewish Community Center, 2071 Tice Valley Blvd., Walnut Creek.

Instructor is JoAnne H. Krause, professor emeritus in theater at State University of New York. Cost is $25 for members, $45 for non-members. For information, call (510) 938-7800.

Beth Chaim Congregation of Danville is collecting clothing, coats and blankets for a homeless shelter in Richmond and the Cambridge Community Center in Concord.
