TORONTO (JTA) -- A Holocaust denier in Canada has teamed with U.S. Internet activists to fight German government efforts aimed at blocking him from the World Wide Web.

Last year, the German government tried without success to restrict access to dozens of Internet sites promoting hate literature and pornography. Last week the government blocked access to Internet sites posting illegal messages promoting racial hatred.

Germany, where Holocaust denial is illegal, took the move largely to prevent Ernst Zundel, 57, a German-born resident of Toronto, from propagating his Holocaust-is-a-hoax message via the global Internet computer network's graphic area, the World Wide Web.

The Internet activists, from American universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of Texas and the University of Pennsylvania, have created mirror sites of Zundel's, making Germany's ban all but unenforceable. They say they oppose censorship.

Reputed ex-Nazi hides in Costa Rica

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (JTA) -- The Simon Wiesenthal Centeris eeking to force Costa Rica to expel an alleged Nazi war criminal.

Efraim Zuroff, director of the center's Israel office, went to the home of Bodhan Koziy -- with a BBC television crew in tow -- during a visit here.

Koziy, 73, was not at home, according to neighbors. Koziy, who apparently has been living in a suburb of San Jose for the last decade, was a Ukrainian police official during World War II.

In August, Rep. Michael McNulty (D-N.Y.) handed a letter signed by 60 other congressmen to Costa Rican President Jose Figueres that said "Koziy was a Nazi policeman in Ukraine, where he shot and killed -- amongst others -- a 4-year-old."

Islamic Jihad head hiding in Paraguay

BUENOS AIRES (JTA) -- Paraguayan police confirmed this week that a leader of the militant fundamentalist Islamic Jihad movement is at large in Ciudad del Este, the southeastern Paraguayan border town renowned as a smuggling center.

According to the Paraguayan newspaper ABC, Aiman Ez Zawahri is under the protection of "dormant cells" of Islamic Jihad in Ciudad del Este and is "beyond the reach of local police."

He is charged with the 1993 attempted murder of Egyptian Minister Hassan Al-Alfi.
