Deaths


Dorothy Gura, in San Francisco on November 8, 2006 at age 96. Passed away peacefully. Beloved wife of the late Al Gura; loving mother of Stephanie (and Lee) Jaret and Barbara (and Fred) Eikenberry; devoted grandmother of Lisa Jaret, Deborah (and Larry) Denny and Jille Eikenberry; great grandmother of Marlowe Denny; aunt of many nieces and nephews. Retired New York City elementary school teacher. Moved to San Francisco after living many years in Florida and San Diego.

Inurnment at Memory Gardens, Lake Worth, Florida. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Jewish Home, 302 Silver Ave., SF, CA 94112 or, Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, Ill. 60601-76331, phone 800-272-3900.


Diane Romaine Lando in San Francisco on Nov. 14, 2006. Our beloved Diane, a 5th generation San Franciscan, is survived by her loving daughter Michele Lando; her devoted parents Hermine and Myron Lando of San Francisco; brother Ron & Alice Lando; and niece Jaclyn of Tiburon.

Diana was born in San Francisco on July 22, 1950. She graduated from Carmel High School in Carmel, CA and went on to graduate from U.C. Berkeley. She then moved to Los Angeles before joining her family business, Style Eyes of California where she had a very successful career. For the last 8 years Diana worked for Management Recruiters International whose support during her illness was deeply appreciated.

The light in Diane’s life was her daughter Michele. There was a special sparkle in her eyes when she would see Michele do well and reach a goal both she and her had set for themselves.

A very special thanks to Dr. Alan Venook and Dr. James Davis for all their help and support. Diane will be deeply missed by her family and her very many dear friends.

A Memorial service was held at Lake Merced Golf and Country Club, Daly City on Nov. 20th with Cantor Martin Feldman presiding.


Esther Miriam Zimmer Lederberg, Ph.D. An accomplished twentieth century scientist and an exceptionally beautiful, loving, and ethical person died November 11 from complications of pneumonia and congestive heart failure. She was 83.

Esther Zimmer was born in the Bronx, New York, on December 18, 1922. She obtained an AB at Hunter in 1942, then proceeded to study genetics at Stanford. She earned her MA at Stanford in 1946, she spent a summer at Hopkins Marine Station studying microbiology under Cornelius van Niel, then pursued her doctorate at the University of Wisconsin (1950). Esther also studied under George Beadle and Edward Tatum.

Accomplishments include: US Public Health Service Fellowship; co-discovery of bacterial conjugation (1945); discovery of lysogenic bacteriophage lambda-phage with transduction in E. coli K-12 (1951); development of replica plating (1952); first observation of F-factor (1953); Recipient, Pasteur Award Society of Illinois Bacteriologists (1956); Fullbright Fellow (Australia, 1957); member of a research team in which J Lederberg won the Nobel Prize in Microbiology (1958); American Cancer Society Sr. Dernham Fellow (1968-70); Director, Plasmid Reference Center (1976-86).

Esther’s interests included Early Music, and the literature of Dickens and Jane Austen.

Esther was married to Joshua Lederberg in 1947, and they were divorced in 1966. Esther met Matthew Simon in 1989, the initial impetus being a common interest in Early Music. Esther and Matthew were married in 1993.

She is survived by Mr. Simon (husband), Benjamin Zimmer (brother), relatives from the Geller and Zimmer families, and the Anderson family children.


Faya M. Weisberger in San Francisco on Nov. 19, 2006. A native New Yorker who found her home in San Francisco. She lived her life to the fullest, experiencing all the City had to offer.

Her greatest joy was being a wife, to the late Robert Weisberger, a mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Marcia (and Bill) Hastings and Ellise (and Henk) Blom; grandchildren, Robin and Brian Hastings, Brandon (and Elizabeth), Dane and Sydney Blom.

At Faye’s request, private family services were held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jewish Home, 302 Silver Ave., SF/CA 94112.
