JFCS Rides hits the road
Transportation has been identified as one of the key issues affecting seniors in Sonoma County.
As a result, JFCS Rides, a program of Seniors At Home in Sonoma County, has been launched and is offering transportation to seniors and disabled adults to get them to medical appointments, the grocery store, other personal appointments and special community events, such as Friendship Circle activities at the local Jewish community center.
Older people’s need for transportation services surfaced not only as a county issue, but one identified in a recent study by the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation, said Diana Klein, director of Jewish Family and Children’s Services in Sonoma County.
JFCS Rides kicked off in November with free rides during the month. The regular fee is $5 per destination.
However, an assessment in the home (which costs $30) is first necessary to determine eligibility.
The program is funded through client fees, corporate sponsors, JCF and other sources. “We’re starting small and growing as we can,” Klein said.
