New statewide Diller teen awards launched

The National Diller Teen Initiatives has launched a new award in which five California Jewish teens will receive the Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award. Each recipient will receive $36,000. Nominations are now being accepted.

The award recognizes outstanding volunteer service achievements, with grant money used to support the teens’ college education or further their community service efforts.

“This award reflects our confidence in today’s youth and our encouragement to continue their outstanding work in the spirit of tikkun olam for all of us and for future generations,” said Helen Diller Family Foundation President Helen Diller.

Any 16- to 19-year-old teen with at least one Jewish parent and/or who self-identifies as Jewish is eligible. While nominees must be Jewish and live in California, the community service project can benefit any community population.

Once nominated, teens have 30 days to complete and return applications. A committee of community leaders will select final award winners, with a public ceremony to be held in mid-2007.

Awards are funded by the Helen Diller Family Foundation, a supporting foundation of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund of the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation.

Emanu-El reinvents family Shabbat program

The second Saturday of the month will soon have new meaning for the littlest members of Congregation Emanu-El — and their parents, too.

On Saturday, Jan. 13, the San Francisco synagogue will launch the first Shabbat morning experience it’s had in years made specifically for families with young children.

Got Shabbat? is part of the Community and Family Education (CAFÉ) initiative. The services begin at 10:45 a.m. and are designed for children ages 6 and under. Parents and children who attend can expect a short service, arts and crafts, music and food. Got Shabbat? will be held the second Saturday of the month through May.
