Brazilian paper abolishes verb ‘to Jew’
A Brazilian newspaper pledged to abolish the use of an anti-Semitic verb in its pages.
Jornal do Brasil responded to Jewish readers who criticized a recent headline that used “Jew” as a verb in the sentence: “What to do when daylight-saving time ‘Jews’ body and soul.” In Portuguese, the verb “to Jew,” or “judiar,” means to mistreat, spoil or mock.
For professor Israel Blajberg, one of the readers who protested the headline, “it is an important contribution of JB to the battle against discrimination.”

Ukraine Holocaust memorial vandalized
A Holocaust memorial in Ukraine was vandalized two days before it was to be unveiled.
On Dec. 20, someone painted a swastika and the words “SS” on the monument in Donetsk, according to the Union of Councils for Jews in the Former Soviet Union.
The memorial marks the border of the Jewish ghetto set up by the Nazis before they sent most of local Jews to their deaths. A dedication ceremony for the memorial went ahead despite the vandalism. — jta
