Shorts: The Arts

Israel Philharmonic celebrates with S.F. concert

The 70th anniversary of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra — with Zubin Mehta conducting — will be marked at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4 at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco.

The orchestra will play Beethoven’s “Leonore Overture No. 3,” Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht” and Berlioz’s “Sinfonie Fantastique, Op. 14.”

The presentation, by the San Francisco Symphony, is part of a North American tour being underwritten by the Koret Foundation.

As a fundraiser, the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is offering tickets at $500 each to the otherwise sold-out event.

For more information, call the Friends’ West Coast office at (310) 445-8406 or email srosenbaum@afipo.org.

Seinfeld must pay Realtor

Jerry Seinfeld was ordered to pay his Realtor fees that he had tried to withhold because she was not available to show a property on Shabbat.

The New York Post reported Jan. 14 that the comedian tried to contact realtor Tamara Cohen in 2005 regarding a Manhattan townhouse she had shown his wife, but Cohen’s phone was turned off because it was Shabbat. So Seinfeld and his wife went to see the townhouse without the agent, negotiating a $3.95 million sale directly with the owner.

Seinfeld argued that Cohen was not entitled to her fee since she wasn’t available to show the place when he wanted to see it. However, New York State Supreme Court Judge Rolando Acosta ruled that Cohen was entitled to a fee of nearly $100,000, the Post reported.
