Herta Schwarzbart Stoer died peacefully at home Feb. 10, 2007, at the age of 98.
She was born on Nov. 3, 1908, in Vienna, Austria, the daughter of Arthur and Pauline Schwarzbart. She was brought up in an orphanage for girls, since her father was killed in the first year of World War I. After graduation from the orphanage, Mrs. Stoer became a teacher at the same orphanage, where she taught French and, above all, dramatics. Since early childhood, she had written and directed dramatic offerings at the school. In 1938, she married Dr. Leopold Stoer and came to the United States. The couple lived in San Francisco and then in Petaluma until 1960, when they moved to Napa, where Dr. Stoer was employed at Napa State Hospital as a staff psychologist and later as program director. He passed away in 2005.
Upon moving to Napa, Mrs. Stoer enrolled at Napa College. While a student, she wrote, produced and directed children’s theater productions “The Goose” and “Puss’n Boots,” adapted from the Grimm Fairy tales, under the auspices of the American University Women and the Napa Recreation Department. After graduation from Napa College, Mrs. Stoer transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in French and German. Upon graduation and completing a year of student teaching in Berkeley in 1966, she became a substitute teacher in secondary schools in the Napa Valley school system.
Mrs. Stoer’s four siblings preceded her in death: her brother Friedrich and sisters Hilde and Gisela all perished in the Shoah; her sister Johanna was laid to rest in Israel.
Mrs. Stoer is survived by her son, Lawrence (Barbara) of Napa, and a daughter, Joyce of San Jose; two grandsons, a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter. She also leaves a nephew, Paul (Sharry) of San Rafael, a niece, Ruth and nephew, Gaby of Israel, and many great-nephews, great-nieces and great-great nephews and nieces.
Private family services will be held. The family wishes to thank her caretakers and Hospice for her wonderful care and comfort. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to Hospice of Napa Valley, 414 South Jefferson St., Napa, CA 94559.
