JCRC celebrates Passover with multicultural seder

The S.F.-based Jewish Community Relations Council will have its 11th annual Freedom Seder on Tuesday, March 27. The multicultural event will honor common histories of struggle and celebrate freedom and justice.

Rabbi Yoel Kahn, director of the Taube Center for Jewish Life at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, will lead the seder, with help from a variety of Bay Area faith and ethnic communities.

The seder begins at 6:30 p.m. at the JCCSF, 3200 California St., S.F. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. A full kosher meal will be served.

Two rabbis named to local AIPAC board

Rabbis Stephen Pearce and Stacey Friedman were voted onto the Northern California Regional Board of AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobby, last month.

The board, which undertakes fundraising and political work, has more than 100 members. Zack Bodner, AIPAC’s Northern California director, said it’s not unusual to have rabbis on the board, but it is novel to simultaneously vote on a pair of rabbis from large congregations.

Pearce, the spiritual leader of San Francisco’s Reform Congregation Emanu-El and Friedman, senior rabbi at San Rafael’s Reform Congregation Rodef Sholom, will attend their first meeting May 1.

Maccabi soccer team seeking members

The deadline to sign up for the Osher Marin JCC’s Maccabi soccer team is April 1.

Jewish boys ages 13–16 are still needed for the team, which will be attending the Maccabi Games April 12–17 in Orange County. The cost of $1,450 covers all expenses, including uniforms.

Hillel stages social justice fair at SFSU

San Francisco Hillel is set to sponsor a Social Justice Fair at San Francisco State University. The Monday, March 26 event will feature music, a blood drive, contests and more. Organizers are urging attendees to bring donations of books, canned food, toiletries and used cell phones. Proceeds go to S.F. Connect, a nonprofit agency that encourages residents to put their talents to work for a better city.

Participating organizations include Jewish Family and Children’s Services, Progressive Jewish Alliance, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy, S.F. Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, the Peace Corps and the Darfur Coalition.

The Social Justice Fair will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at SFSU’s Malcolm X Plaza. For more information, call (415) 333-4922.
