The camptown hit parade
Jewish song leaders interviewed for this story were asked which songs are the most popular summer after summer. Parents and others over the age for campers will be pleased to know that tunes from the past aren’t losing any of their power.
“If you’re hanging out with your friends during the school year, camp is the place is you’ll get older traditional stuff that you’d never listen to,” said Ira Scott Levin, song leader at the East Bay Jewish Community Center in Berkeley.
Here are a few of the most popular Jewish camp songs today, according to our small but well-informed, sample:
“Heveinu” by David Feingold
“Not By Might, Not By Power” by Debbie Friedman
“Im Tirtzu” (Dan Nichols has a version of this on his “Be Strong” album)
“All Together Now” by the Beatles (a huge hit at the East Bay JCC)
