Israeli films take Cannes awards
Israeli films and filmmakers claimed multiple prizes at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“Jellyfish,” the story of three Tel Aviv women from husband-and-wife filmmakers Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen, won the Camera d’Or for best debut film at festival’s closing ceremony. Earlier, the couple was honored by the French Artists Association and won the festival’s Young Critics Award.
Eran Kolirin’s “The Band’s Visit,” about a visit to Israel from an Egyptian police band, earned honors from Fipresci, the International Federation of Film Critics, and the Cinefil prize, an award given by student filmmakers at Cannes.
Seinfeld to stir up movie buzz in Israel
Jerry Seinfeld is scheduled to visit Israel in November to promote the new animated film “Bee Movie.”
The animated comedy, produced by DreamWorks, will debut in Israel on Nov. 29. Seinfeld, who wrote and produced the film, stars alongside Renée Zellweger, John Goodman, Chris Rock, Matthew Broderick and others.
The movie tells the story of a male bee (voiced by Seinfeld) who graduated college and is disgruntled because his only life option is to manufacture honey. The bee hangs out in New York, where he befriends a flower salesgirl.
Dorit Yishai, who is in charge of the distribution of the movie in Israel, met with Seinfeld in Los Angeles. “He came up with idea to come to Israel and was happy about the opportunity to do so,” she said. — ynetnews.com
