Find Me a Match

Club to Meet Singles

As sexy as the Internet is, some like to meet other singles face-to-face. According to j. readers, the loveliest faces can be found at Forbidden Island in the East Bay and the Cellar in San Francisco.

Forbidden Island co-owner Martin Cate says that the Alameda club emulates “the good tiki bars of the 1950s and ’60s.” It also boasts the best selection of rum in the Bay Area.

The Cellar, as its Web site proclaims, is “San Francisco’s only subterranean nightclub.” As marketing manager Jona Goodman says, the Cellar is “nice, but not too posh.” There’s a Jewish singles mixer every second Saturday, ’80s music on Fridays and karaoke on Mondays.

Congregation Emanu-El’s Late Shabbat won second place for San Francisco.

Place to Meet a Nice Jewish Date,

Lonesome Jews and their unhappy Jewish mothers are much harder to find these days, thanks to the romantic geniuses at JDate, which swept the Bay Area in this category.

Along with many of its former clients, JDate is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. JDate spokesperson Gail Laguna notes that JDate is different from other services because of its large network of, well, Jews, and the fact that most subscribers are looking for a “long-term, serious relationship and not just a date for the weekend.”

Second place winners are Beth Jacob Congregation in the East Bay, and the Mission Minyan in San Francisco.
