New name for JCC ‘seniors’ programs

If you’re still looking for “seniors” activities at the Albert L. Schultz JCC, look again.

The seniors community department at the Albert L. Schultz JCC in Palo Alto has been expanded to reach out to adults in any stage of life, said Adult Programs Director Heidi Stein.

Since the department’s name change from “seniors” to “adult” at the start of the year, Stein said she and the new program manager, Jane-Rachel Schonbrun, have been planning activities for adults ages 20 to 100.

Previously, younger adults tended to overlook interesting events simply because they were sponsored through the senior department, Stein said.

“We really felt that the programs that we were offering would be of interest to people of a variety of ages. Adults of all different ages enjoy concerts, enjoy classes.”

The two are developing lecture series, classes, concerts, holiday celebrations and group trips to Israel for next year. Also, the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco recently invited the Palo Alto JCC to participate in an upcoming adults trip to Morocco.

Despite the new name, Stein and Schonbrun will continue to run specific senior activities — like the weekly lunch program, transportation service and monthly bus trips to the ballet, theater and museums, through the senior excursion fund, a grant focused on cultural arts events and made possible by the Jewish Community Endowment Fund.
