Classes for the holidays

At least a dozen Bay Area synagogues and Jewish organizations will hold classes on how to prepare for the High Holy Days.

Upcoming classes include:

San Francisco and the North Peninsula:

“A Sacred Journey for the Soul,” 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at Temple Beth Jacob, 1550 Alameda de las Pulgas, Redwood City.

“Who Shall Live,” a play followed by discussion, 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at Congregation Sherith Israel, 2266 California St., San Francisco.

“Who Do You Want to Be?” workshop for interfaith couples about creating your own rituals, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 at Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California St., S.F. Led by Rabbi Eve Ben Ora and Helena McMahon.

“Preparation for the High Holy Days,” 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10 and 17 at Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. Led by Rabbi Elisheva Salamo.

“How We Die, How We Mourn (And Therefore How We Get Ready for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur),” 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 9 at Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake St., S.F. Led by Rabbi Lawrence Kushner. For a complete listing of Emanu-El’s 6 other classes offered through Sept. 22,

South Bay:

“Tsotsi,” a film screening and discussion, 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at Congregation Sinai, 1532 Willowbrae Ave., San Jose. Rabbi Joshua Berkenwald will lead a discussion about the movie’s themes of repentance and personal transformation. Selichot at 11:15 p.m. following the movie.

Film screenings of “The Jazz Singer,” “Kissing Jessica Stein,” “Liberty Heights” and “Enemies: A Love Story,” 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at Congregation Shir Hadash, 20 Cherry Blossom Lane, Los Gatos. A late Selichot service will follow.

“Change and Repentance — The Case of the Sinning Sage,” 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 at Congregation Kol Emeth, 4175 Manuela Ave., Palo Alto.

“Hilchot Teshuva — The Laws of Repentance,” at the Addison Penzak Jewish Community Center, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos. Study session led by Rabbi Joshua Berkenwald of Congregation Sinai and Rabbi Joshua Fenton of the JCC.

“A Time of Reflection,” 7:30 p.m. Monday Sept. 17 at Congregation Beth Am, 26790 Arastradero Blvd., Los Altos. Led by Beth Am member and author Ellen Stromberg.

North Bay:

“Judaism Allows U-Turns,” 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays through October at Chabad Jewish Center of Sonoma County, 2321 Bethards Drive, Santa Rosa. Led by Rabbi Mendel Wolvovsky.

East Bay:
