Helen Berliner, the “Mayor” of 2190 Washington Street, died peacefully August 31. She was 88. A lifelong resident of San Francisco, Helen delighted in her home and enjoyed the city to the fullest. Her devotion to family and friends was legendary, as was her wit, her skill in the kitchen and her talent with a pair of knitting needles. One of the last of the great ladies from another era, Helen Berliner was respected and welcomed by decent, hardworking people from all walks of life throughout San Francisco, from Swan Oyster Depot to Gump’s Silver Department. She shared her life through extraordinary friendships with a close-knit group of indefatigable women whose lives rose and fell together in a rhythm of laughter, high spirits and vitality. The domestic adventures of these women could have provided rich material for the fictional antics of Lucy and Ethel. Mainly, Helen was forthright, fair and honest in her life which she dedicated to her husband, Eddie Berliner, children and grandchildren. For both Helen and Eddie, family was everything and they began a tradition, more than 50 years ago of an annual gathering that grew over the years to accommodate and embrace the ever-widening circle of their family. Her family has wonderful memories of a truly remarkable woman. They would like to especially acknowledge Dr. Richard Gerber, whose gentle attention far exceeded any medical care imaginable. The family would also like to thank the extraordinary doctors, nurses and care-givers who supported Helen in life and in death with the utmost dignity. Helen Berliner is survived by her son, Art Berliner, and daughter, Susie Stern; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by us all. Art Berliner and Marian Lever, Dr. Richard and Susie Stern, Dr. Tom and Karen Quigley, Elissa and Joshua Quigley, Jessica Stern, Michelle Stern and Glenn McDonald, Amelia and Ari McDonald. There will be no memorial service. Donations may be made to Jewish Home, 302 Silver Ave., San Francisco, CA 94112 www.jhsf.org, or Jewish Family and Children’s Services of San Francisco, 2150 Post St., SF, CA 94115, www.jfcs.org.
