Shorts: Seniors

Caregiving workshops slated at Emanu-El

Taking care of an elderly or ill relative or friend can be rewarding and challenging. Jewish Family and Children’s Services and Congregation Emanu-El are teaming up to make those challenges easier.

“Caring for Those You Care About,” a new monthly workshop sponsored by JFCS’ Seniors•At•Home program and Emanu-El, will meet to discuss the issues related to caregiving, including coping with diseases, providing home care and avoiding caregiver fatigue. The first workshop, on Nov. 5, will discuss how to be an effective healthcare advocate.

“Caring for Those You Care About” will meet on the first Monday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Guild Hall 1, Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake St., S.F. A light dinner will be provided. Suggested donation is $10, for dinner. To register, visit www.emanuelsf.org/register, or contact Frana Price at fprice@emanuelsf.org or (415) 751-2541 ext. 151.

JFCS offers course in end-of-life care

It takes a special touch to provide end-of-life and palliative care — and JFCS is looking for a few gentle caregivers.

Seniors•At•Home, a program of JFCS, will be offering a 25-hour Palliative and End-of-Life Care Volunteer Training course starting Oct. 16. Volunteers will learn how to provide practical, emotional and spiritual support to clients and their families. Course graduates will be assigned a client in their area to visit for two to four hours per week.

No prior medical or hospice training is necessary. The training will be held at JFCS, 2150 Post St., S.F. The course is free and will take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sundays, through Nov. 1.

For more information about the course, or to find out about future JFCS volunteer training opportunities, contact Rachel Kesselman at (415) 449-1288 or RachelK@jfcs.org.
