Palestinian, Israeli diplomats meet at Auschwitz
The top Israeli and Palestinian diplomats in Poland visited the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp complex together Sunday, Oct. 21, in a rare joint act of Holocaust reflection.
Khaled Ghazal, who initiated the visit, said he hoped such acts of remembrance will help build better ties between his people and Israelis.
His Israeli counterpart, David Peleg, added that the visit marked “maybe a very modest contribution to a better atmosphere between Israelis and Palestinians.” — ap
Nazism had good points, some Germans say
One in four Germans see positive aspects of Nazism, according to a survey of more than 1,000 Germans conducted for Stern magazine by the Forsa Institute.
Seventy percent of Germans felt there was nothing good about the Nazis. Those who found something positive pointed to such things as building highways and supporting traditional family values.
Age influenced the answers, researchers found. Thirty-seven percent of those older than 60 were more likely to see a positive side to Nazism. — jta
Thai students sorry for Nazi parade
A Thai school has apologized for sponsoring a celebration that involved a Nazi-themed parade, according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
A group of students at Thewphaingarm School in Bangkok chose to dress as Nazis on sports day, an annual event held in September that divides students into teams.
Photos from the event showed about 200 students — between the ages of 6 and 18 — dressed in red outfits with swastikas on their baseball caps, behind a large sign with “NAZI” in shoulder-high letters. — ap
