Deaths

Cecelia Bieber, age 97, daughter of Hilda and Benno Levine, died peacefully at her home October 20th. Loving surviving wife of Paul Bieber of 36 years. Holocaust survivor having been born in Germany escaped to Shanghai China and came to Florida in 1946. Loving sister of Luisa Grunwald who died in 2003. Gracious friend of many including Shanghai survivors and the late Jan Pessl. Active bridge player at Stonestown YMCA and traveler. Active as charitable member of Congregation B’Nai Emunah. Gravesite services were held on October 23 at Salem Cemetery. Donations to the Jewish Home for the Aged in SF and Congregation B’Nai Emunah would be her desire.

Jasmine Marah, 12-24-46 to 10-18-07. Jasmine, a native of Los Angeles, died of metastatic melanoma at her home in Berkeley, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was a beloved and respected elder of the Chochmat HaLev community.

The 60 year-old retired architect, designer and educator was a staunch equal rights activist in the lesbian and women’s communities in the ’70s and ’80s and was Montreal Mother of the Year in 1972. Jasmine enjoyed gardening, writing poetry and mystery novels, and many other creative pursuits.

She is survived by daughter Maacah Marah, son-in-law Steve Weston, grandson Asher Weston, spiritual partner Shaman Maggid shir ‘Az, and the Rubenstein family: sister Rina, brothers Simon and Joshua, niece Stephanie and nephew Samuel. Her son, Shem Tsipur died in 1995.

Services were held at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland by Sinai Memorial Chapel, (925) 962-3636. Donations to Women’s Cancer Resource Center, 5741 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, CA 94609

Gloria Licht Novack At peace on October 9, 2007, at the age of 79. Matriarch of the Novack and Licht families, Gloria’s life was a brilliant illumination and unflagging masterwork of love, friendship, stewardship, and philanthropy. Her passing cannot diminish the light she brought to so many people, whether to family or to friends, whether to Judaism or to the arts. Her indefatigable energy will persist and perpetuate within all of us who survived her and were transformed by her enthusiastic love of living and good works.
