Deaths


Long time Alameda resident, George Albert, died on October 9, 2007, at 11:32 p.m. at San Leandro Hospital, San Leandro, CA. He was 88 years old. He is survived by two sons; Paul and wife, Judith, of Alameda; Fred and wife, Kate, of Wellington, New Zealand; and two grandchildren, Richard and Samantha who are currently attending college in California. George’s wife, Sylvia, died in 1968. George served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. His accounting firm was established in the mid-1950’s. He was a CPA for over 60 years.

The funeral and interment was held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 12, 2007 at the Home of Eternity, 5000 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA with Rabbi Allen Bennett, Temple Israel Congregation, Alameda officiating. In lieu of gifts and flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Temple Israel Congregation of Alameda or Beth Israel Congregation of Berkeley, CA in his memory and honor.


Marvin H. Gold died October 21 at the age of 92, exactly seven years to the day after losing his wife of 60 years, Sophye Mendelson Gold. Marvin leaves his loving companion, Naomi Kabakov, his sister Rae Brooks and children Norman (Jean) Gold and Judy (Jordan) Bloom. His sister, Bernice Smallen, pre-deceased him. Marvin also leaves grandchildren Matea (Jono Lenzner) Gold, Rachel (Josh Miller) Gold, Michael (Diane) Bloom, Nicole (Sue Swigart) Bloom, and Jonathan (Jill) Bloom and four great-grandchildren: Miriam Sophia Bloom, Elena Elizabeth Bloom, Marlee Rae Bloom and Evan Harris Blumensweig; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and foster children De and Kim Huong Nguyen and family. In addition, he will be sorely missed by his neighbors and friends at Rivers Edge Retirement Community.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Marvin moved to Los Angeles as a teenager. He graduated from Manual Arts High School and UCLA, received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from University

of Illinois, Urbana, and completed a post-doctorate fellowship at Northwestern University. After a short stint at Visking Corporation in Chicago, he spent a long and distinguished career at Aerojet General Corporation. Dr. Gold holds 88 patents and was recognized with the U.S. Department of Navy Civilian Meritorious Public Service Citation for his technical and administrative leadership in the development of Polaris solid rocket propellants. Following his retirement from Aerojet, Dr. Gold continued to invent, was awarded several additional patents, and consulted in his specialty of organic chemistry.

A founding member of Congregation Beth Shalom of Carmichael, CA and founder and president for many years of People to People, now known as Sacramento Council for International Visitors.

Robert S. Reiss in San Francisco on Oct. 25, 2007 at age 92. Beloved husband of Muriel W. Reiss; loving father of Edward Reiss and Allan (Lynne) Reiss; adored grandfather of Evan, Rebecca and Avery Reiss. Dear brother of Anna Ravon.

Graduate of John Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1941. Served as an officer in the U.S. Army during WWII. Robert did research and clinical training at Tuft’s, Harvard and Vanderbilt Universities before establishing his practice in San Francisco. Practiced medicine in San Francisco for over 40 years serving his patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Funeral services were held at Home of Peace Cemetery Chapel, Colma. In lieu of flowers contributions to the charity of your choice preferred. Sinai Memorial Chapel, S.F.


Paulette Sevi, age 85, passed away peacefully on October 24 in La Verne, California. Widow of the late Isaac Sevi, survived by her loving daughter Elaine Saffan, her son-in-law David and her precious granddaughter, Gina. Funeral services were 11 AM, Monday, October 29th, Home of Eternity Cemetery Chapel, 5000 Piedmont Ave., Oakland. She was a resident of Oakland most of her life. Towne Ave, Pomona, CA 91767 or the Holocaust Center of Northern California, 121 Steuart Street, Suite 10, San Francisco CA 94105. Mrs. Sevi, born in Salonika, Greece, was a Holocaust survivor who hid in the mountains in Greece. She married Isaac after the war and later immigrated to the United States where they raised their family.
