Film on Jewish leftists to screen in Berkeley
Jewish Voice for Peace will co-sponsor a Berkeley screening of the documentary “Young, Jewish and Left.” Directed by Konnie Chameides and Irit Reinheimer, the film weaves queer culture, Jewish/Arab history, secular Yiddishkeit and spiritual tradition into the tapestry of contemporary leftist politics.
Following the screening, a panel of young Jewish activists, including JVP co-founders Julie Iny and Julia Caplan, will discuss the film. “Young, Jewish and Left” shows at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at La Peña Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck, Berkeley. JCC hosts a month of Chanukah events
The JCC of San Francisco will be hosting an array of Chanukah-themed events in December.
Learn to prepare Chanukah treats at a cooking class at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3, $45 to $50; share a meal with Shoah survivors from France at a Chanukah dinner celebration with kosher French fare at 6 p.m. Dec. 7, $25 to $35; and bring a box dinner to a family Chanukah celebration and dinner (drinks and desserts provided) at 3 p.m. Dec. 9, $7 to $5.
The evenings promise to be lively with a Jewish Singles Over 40-sponsored holiday dance party, which will feature music by the Rolando Morales Quintet, at 7 p.m. Dec. 15, $15 to $25, and with the Hub’s “Eight Crazy Nights” of Chaukah held at various dates and venues. Things will wrap up with a kosher, vegetarian Chinese dinner and two Israeli films at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 25, $12 to $20.
There will also be a daily menorah-lighting from Dec. 4 to Dec. 12.

‘Miracle of Light’ concert/latke party
The Bellvue Club and the Judah. L. Magnes Museum will jointly present a Chanukah concert/latke party for adults and kids. “The Miracle of Light” features Oakland Hebrew Day School students in performance, along with the Ellis Island Old World Folk Band.
Dinner, latkes and Shirley Temples will be served. The event takes place at 5 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Bellvue Club, 525 Bellvue Ave., Oakland. Tickets: $15-$25; reservations a must. For more information, call (510) 451-1000.
‘Latke tent’ going up at Saul’s
Saul’s Restaurant and Delicatessen in Berkeley will celebrate the Festival of Lights this year with a sidewalk latke tent during the weekends before and after Chanukah.
The latke tent will be set up 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 2, and Dec. 8 and 9, at 1475 Shattuck Ave.
Potato latkes topped with applesauce and sour cream can be purchased individually, or by the dozen.
