Cancer center named for Helen Diller
Helen Diller, a Bay Area philanthropist in the Jewish and general communities, was honored this week by U.C. San Francisco. The hospital renamed its comprehensive cancer center the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“This is a tremendous honor for me and my family, and I am proud to have my name associated with one of the leading health care institutions in the country,” said Diller, a native San Franciscan now living in San Mateo County.
Diller established Jewish studies programs at U.C. Berkeley and U.C. Santa Cruz, and provided the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco with grant money to establish a preschool, which was named the Helen Diller Family Preschool.
Teen program plans informational sessions
Shalhevet, a 10-week teenage education program culminating in a two-week trip to Poland and Israel in March is looking for Bay Area Jewish enrollees in the 11th or 12th grade.
Informational sessions will be held Sunday, Dec. 2 in Berkeley; Dec. 9 at Camp Newman in Santa Rosa and Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco; and Dec. 12 in Walnut Creek.

AIPAC membership events coming up
December is nigh, and that means the annual round of membership events for AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobby.
The Sacramento luncheon, first of the events, takes place 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 at the Radisson Hotel Sacramento and requires a $50 donation. The South Bay Membership Dinner, for $85 a plate, begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Santa Clara Convention center.
San Francisco’s Membership Luncheon is 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17 at the San Francisco Hilton and Towers, and requires a $70 donation. The East Bay Membership Dinner takes place 6 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Oakland Marriott City Center, for $85.
Keynote speakers include Howard Kohr, AIPAC executive director, and Daniel Gordis, senior vice president and senior fellow at the Shalem Center.

JVS scholarship deadline approaching
Bay Area men and women hoping to enroll in short-term vocational programs but short on cash may be eligible for a Jewish Vocational Services scholarship.

The Jewish Study Network is enrolling married couples for its Shabbaton, Dec. 21 to 23 at the Biltmore Hotel in Santa Clara.
