Marin Jewish man seeking liver donor

A Marin County resident diagnosed with cancer has been contacting local synagogues in the hope that a congregant can provide him with the liver he needs for transplant surgery.

Ben Bernstein, who suffers from hepatocelllular carcinoma, hopes some “altruistic person” will donate a portion of their liver to help save his life. The donor would have to have type O blood, be in good physical condition with no history of cancer or liver disease and be younger than 55.

Bernstein says his insurance covers the donor’s entire rehabilitation process and lost wages. U.C. San Francisco, where Bernstein is being treated, states that 99 percent of liver donors “go on to live a healthy and normal life.”
