Jewish library reopens in Marin

The Osher Marin JCC, Congregation Rodef Sholom and Brandeis Hillel Day School celebrated the reopening of a community library Jan. 27 on their campus in San Rafael.

The library had been closed since 2001. It first opened in 1992, but closed when Rodef, Brandeis and the JCC were all unable to secure the funding necessary to pay a librarian.

Now, thanks to Elliot and Barbara Lefferts of Marin, the library is newly available and renamed the Lefferts Jewish Community Library.

The library has about 5,000 books, and librarians are working on digitizing the catalog of titles.

Lisa Katz, one of the two librarians, is excited about being a resource for Marin’s Jewish community. “We’ve started adding slowly to the existing collection, but right now we’re really just waiting to see what the public wants us to purchase,” she said.

The library is about the size of two average-size bedrooms. It will be open twice a week, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, and 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sundays.

The library’s collection is primarily composed of books for adults. Children can read books from the adjacent Brandeis Hillel library, although those won’t be available for checkout.

The librarians hope that as the libraries grow, there will be coordination of book talks, author visits, online databases, book club groups and preschool story times.
