Bay Area Yom HaShoah commemorations
This year, Holocaust Remembrance Day is May 2. Solemn commemorations are scheduled for every corner of the region.
All the following events are free and open to the public.
San Francisco
• 6 p.m. May 1 at Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake St., S.F. Information: (415) 777-9060 or (415) 977-7444. Speaker: Kristallnacht eyewitness Ralph Romberg, with music from the Jewish chorus and a showing of the film “Jewish Life in Warsaw and Lwów.”
• “Unto Every Person There is a Name,” 10 a.m. May 4 at the Lincoln Park Holocaust Memorial site. Recitations of victims’ names and a noon candle-lighting by survivors. Information: Irving Golden, (415) 456-0344, or Irving Abramowitz, (415) 752-9304.
Peninsula/South Bay
• 7 p.m. April 30 at Congregation Beth Am, 26790 Arastradero Road, Los Altos Hills. Information: (650) 493-4661. Speaker: David Akov, Israel Consul General.
• “Yiddish Culture: Lost But Not Forgotten,” 6:30 p.m. May 1 at Peninsula Temple Sholom, 1655 Sebastian Drive, Burlingame. Information: (650) 697-2266. Speaker: Chayale Ash, former Yiddish theater actress, Holocaust survivor.
North Bay
• 7 p.m. May 1 at Congregation Rodef Sholom, 170 N. Pedro Road, San Rafael. Information: (415) 479-3441. Speakers: Marin Holocaust survivors, refugees and hidden children including Ida Gelbart,
Roy Calder, Lore Gilbert and Paul Schwartzbart. Music from the Brandeis Hillel Day School choir and a tour of the Marin JCC’s exhibition of Evvy Eisen’s photos of Shoah survivors.

East Bay
