To make aliyah, road trippers take the long way
by
After facing difficult weather and driving conditions, two men from the United Kingdom completed their 18-day, 2,500-mile road trip from London to Israel, arriving in the Jewish state earlier this month to make aliyah.
Driving a 1948 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith — a 60-year-old car to mark Israel’s 60th year of independence — Alexander Singer, 28, and Yaniv Cohen, 26, said they dreamed of moving to Israel but were just waiting for the right opportunity.
“We are really excited to get through to Israel,” said Singer, who used to live in London. “It will be hard to get back to normal life after such a unique and intense experience, but it’s a nice way to start aliyah.”
The two were part of the U.K. Car Rally, organized by Nefesh B’Nefesh and the Jewish National Fund. Another 23 drivers came along to show their support.
The cars were ferried across the English Channel to France. From there, the drivers went to Greece, before shipping the cars on an El Al Cargo 747 Jumbo to Tel Aviv.
Cohen, who grew up in Manchester, said he wanted to make aliyah because, despite his happiness in England, “there was one thing missing, and that was Israel.” — jpost.com
