J. writer, publisher win Jewish press awards

J. staff writer Stacey Palevsky and publisher Marc Klein received Simon Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism at the American Jewish Press Association’s annual conference, held this year in Washington, D.C.

Klein was awarded first place for excellence in feature writing for his piece “Why is Hibuki Unhappy?” Aug. 24, 2007. His story highlighted the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation’s efforts to help Israeli children cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder brought on by the Second Lebanon War in 2006. This initiative included giving children stuffed dogs named Hibuki to help them express their feelings of sadness and uncertainty about the future.

Palevsky’s Oct. 19, 2007 feature “A Legal Odyssey,” for which she received second place for excellence in personality profiles, told of the unlikely friendship between an Orthodox Berkeley lawyer, Joshua Safran, and his pro-bono client, a Christian woman convicted of murdering her abusive husband.

The annual AJPA conference, which ran this year from June 22 to 25, is the largest gathering of American and Canadian editors, publishers, business managers and writers for Jewish publications.
