Sherith Israel hosting identity symposium

Congregation Sherith Israel’s third annual symposium, “Mine, Yours, Ours: Ad-venture into Jewish Identity,” will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. October 19 at the synagogue, 2266 California St., San Francisco.

The symposium will examine how Jews form a religious or cultural identity in an America with so many blended, step-, mixed, interfaith and alternative families.

Keynote speakers are Ari Y. Kelman, assistant professor of American Studies at U.C. Davis, and Daniel Handler (better known as Lemony Snicket). There will also be four interactive breakout sessions.

Author Naomi Wolf to speak in Bay Area

Jewish author Naomi Wolf, promoting her latest book, “Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries,” will give a talk 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12 at Congregation Shomrei Torah, 2600 Bennett Valley Road, Santa Rosa. For more information on the free event, call (707) 578-5519.

Sukkot beckons in Albany, El Cerrito
