U.C. Davis presents week filled with Jewish culture celebrations

A portable version of the Western Wall will appear on the U.C. Davis campus during Jewish Culture Week April 14-19.

Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, while folks are scribbling their thoughts, Jimmy Gamliel will present live music on the Quad.

Information tables also will provide answers to questions about Israel and local Jewish community events.

At 7 p.m. the following day, Tuesday, April 15, Bay Area political and foreign policy consultant John Rothmann will speak on the Middle East in Room 1100 of the Social Sciences Building.

A Comedy Night benefit for the Jewish Student Union will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 at the Coffee House on campus. Comics Jeff Rothpan and Bruce Smirnoff will entertain.

Rothpan has performed on NBC's "Tonight Show" as well as A&E's "An Evening at the Improv." He also has been the opening act for such comics as Jim Carrey, Jay Leno, Harry Belafonte and Dennis Miller.

Smirnoff has appeared on two dozen national television shows, including MTV's "Half-Hour Comedy Hour," "Standup Spotlight" on VH1 and "The Late Show" on Fox.

Tickets will be $8 at the door.

"Why Are We Remembering?" will be the theme of a Holocaust educational evening at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 17 in Room 1100 of Social Science, according to JSU officer Diana Portnoy.

Survivor Laura Hillman, who lost her family to the Nazis when she was 15, will speak. A free showing of "Schindler's List" will follow at 8 p.m.

A Shabbat service and dinner, co-sponsored by U.C. Davis Housing and Marriott Food Services, will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, April 18 at the Castilian Dining Commons off campus. A klezmer band will provide music for an Israeli dance performance.

Finally on Saturday, April 19, a picnic and fair will take place on the Quad. Jewish Student Union will set up a table to make partial havdallah kits, which will include a candle holder and spice box.

A short havdallah service at the Davis Community Park at F Street and Covell will follow at 7:30 p.m. A sing-along of camp tunes will follow.
