Area athletes win big at Maccabiah

Wasserman, 25, trampled the competition as he took the gold in the track and field 4x4 relay. Overcoming an ankle sprain during training two weeks before he flew to Israel, Wasserman earned his second Maccabiah medal.

Four years ago, Wasserman won the silver in the 800-meter at the 14th games. His father, Marc Wasserman, scored the bronze in the master's division track and field 400m, and his grandmother Frieda Sidorsky, then 76 years old, took 10 gold medals in master's swimming.

The Wassermans were the first family in Maccabiah history to have three representatives from different generations competing in the same games.

Scott Druskin, 20, of Danville also netted track and field victories. He took the bronze in the 200m and the silver in the 400m, just one-tenth of a second behind gold medalist Matt Levine of Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, out on the golf course, San Franciscan Gary Shemano aced the master's golf tournament for the gold. The 52-year-old investor consistently hit in the 70s, totaling 301 strokes through four rounds.

In her first Maccabiah Games, Hillary Sloss, 36, scored three gold medals and a silver in master's division swimming. Sloss, who grew up in Belvedere and now resides in Seal Beach near San Diego won the gold in the 50m freestyle, the 200m freestyle and the 200m individual medley, and a silver in the 100m freestyle.

In other wins, a four-man rowing team from the U.S. that included Greenbrae resident David Rouda, 32, took the gold in the quadruple scull. Also, the U.S. volleyball team, which includes Kenny Rogers, 31, of San Francisco, won the bronze in open competition.
