In first person... Jewish man caught off guard by something `emiss' in sign

BEN SHEIN
Special to the Bulletin

One day driving home from the grocery I passed a sign in front of a gas station that read "Emiss." I hurried home to tell my wife that I found a gas station run by Jewish people who believed in truth in their work. They even advertised the Hebrew/Jewish word for truth, emiss or emet.

Well, for sure the next time we needed gas I drove there and asked to see the owner or manager. A burly gentleman came to the car asking if something was wrong.

"Nothing wrong, I just want to congratulate you on the use of the word `emiss.'"

"Why," he said, "it simply stands for the fact that we do emissions and emission tests and the sign wasn't big enough for the full word."

I was deflated. I mumbled something, and left feeling foolish and old.

My wife laughed till her sides hurt and I giggled some, too.
