Latest guide to local Jewish life published
SARAH HOROWITZ Bulletin Correspondent
Whether you need an Orthodox moyel, a Shabbat group for interfaith couples, a Yiddish class or a way to get involved in Israeli causes, you'll find it in Resource: A Guide to Jewish Life in the Bay Area. A collaborative effort between the Jewish Information and Referral Service and the Jewish Bulletin, Resource, an annual guide, is in its ninth year of publication. The 1998 edition of Resource, edited by Shirley La Mere, is 16 pages longer than last year's. The advertising for the Business and Service area has tripled in size. In this year's Resource, you'll also find more kosher restaurants. Listings run the gamut from social services, groups for seniors and Holocaust survivors, folk dance and genealogy options, travel opportunities and Israel programs. You'll also find Jewish delis, kosher bakeries and butchers. Nine years ago Resource's publisher, Nora Contini, recognized that Bay Area Jews needed help navigating the Bay Area's sometimes hidden Jewish community. "The San Francisco Jewish community is the seventh largest Jewish community in the country and yet it's somewhat invisible compared to that of East Coast cities," she said. One of the things that makes Resource valuable, Contini says, is its user-friendly format. For example, if you're looking for a preschool for your 4-year-old, you can look up preschools and find a listing of all the Jewish preschools in your area. Almost every year since its inception Resource has received the Simon Rockower Award for Excellence in Jewish Journalism. This year's Resource includes approximately 420 listings with e-mail and/or Web addresses as well as an article on accessing the virtual Jewish community ("What's new in the Jewish community? Check the Internet"). A second article looks at Israel's 50th birthday along with a sampling of local celebrations. Among the special events are concerts by violinists Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman, art exhibitions and a writers' conference. Sara Goren of Mill Valley designed the cover. Originally a chalk and gouache work on paper, "In Search of Language" is a graceful piece invoking the beauty of Hebrew letters. Copies of Resource will be sent to all Bulletin subscribers. Resource will also be sold in Bay Area Judaica shops. For information or for a newcomer's copy, call (415) 777-4545 or e-mail JewishNfo@aol.com, or mail $7 to: Jewish Bulletin of Northern California, 225 Bush St. #1480, S.F., CA 94104.
