Torah talk by phone nets 50,000 calls
More than 50,000 callers have participated in Torah on the Line, a nationwide telephone Chabad learning system implemented last By dialing (510) 558-Torah followed by the number 3 for children's programs, East Bay callers may select from eight categories.
"The Calendar Expert" calculates the Jewish calendar counterparts for birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions. Other selections for kids include "Torah Insights," "The Mitzvah Campaign," "Community News," "Candlelighting Times," "Torah Insights" and "Moshiach." Adults may press "1" for lessons in Yiddish, "2" for lessons in English or "4" for the weekly Torah portion. Program director Bentzion Novack says the most popular classes are "Dial a Jewish Story," featuring Hymen Brown of the "CBS Mystery Theater" and the Tanya (mystical) class taught by Rabbi Manis Friedman.
